Dvd packaging and presentation

I was showed some pretty eye-catching and creative dvd projects done by other students in the past. Instead of just burning a dvd and putting it in a boring black case, the packaging and presentation should go along with the theme and concept of the work. I would be doing myself a disservice to put so much into my final project and then just burn it to a blank disc and place it in an average plastic case.  For the disc itself I am thinking about making a collage of images in photoshop (Ariel, Djs, Lights, Ursela, Sebastian..etc.) make use of bright contrasting colors, something to really grab the viewers attention, draw them in, a piece of art in itself. I'm not sure exactly how I will package the dvd yet. Any suggestions?? An idea that just came to mind is getting a large piece of wood or foam in the shape of a sea shell, one that can be opened so it has two sides, somehow I could make a slot for the CD inside. I of course would paint it purple to match Ariel's seashell top, I would be tempted cover the paint in glitter, but that might be frustrating for people to hold and carry around. glitter is a big pain to get off skin and clothes, and it seems to always be there even after multiple showers. I'll try to think of some other creative ways in which i could package my final...All suggestions are welcome:)

Progress Report

So far I've been making OK progress on my final, this is not OK. Although what I have completed is very strong and successful. I've had to finish projects and papers in other classes which hasn't left me a lot of time for my final for DA2. Based off my schedule in my proposal I should be in Soundtrack and done with a rough draft of the audio and video. I am just finishing up my draft of the video. I plan to spend my whole weekend working on the audio as I predict that to be the most challenging and time consuming aspect of my piece. It will be a good idea to have everything done and loaded back into motion as whole piece by next week (class time) , then I can work with Casey on making the dvd. I'm going to draft up a plan for the dvd menu and how everything will be organized on that (making my project interactive) etc. Check back for dvd ideas and drafts....

final proposal

My proposal for my final project.

Final Proposal

I propose to base my final project off of the Disney movie The Little Mermaid. While using particular clips from the actual film and the application Motion I hope to compose a moving image that goes along with a soundtrack that I plan to create myself in Soundtrack Pro and/or Garageband. Each clip serves a purpose and will be grouped with others alike to create tiny narratives, occurrences and situations that are unrealistic and considered fantasy. The score as it is with most moving pictures is the most important, and will the focus of my project. I plan to use a large portion of dialogue from the movie and mix that up with own complementary composed tracks. I wish to create a final that is what I would call a remix of the film. But at the same time a harmonious compilation that really has visual flow, something that will take the viewer on an imaginative journey; similar to a daydream like state of the unconscious, where the viewer is more open to the ideas and notions of the fantastical.

I chose to approach a project such as this because it includes the aspects of digital and conceptual art that I am most interested in. I enjoy working with animation and all forms of the moving image, and I’ve recently been exposed to the possibilities of producing sounds and tracks of my own. I think this project will allow me to become more familiar and comfortable with the applicable software’s. I relate to the concept of the proposed project because it is all based on fantasy and the what if? My art tends to always involve the fantasy and magic themes; it also tends to probe at the notion that anything is possible. I feel it’s appropriate even more so today, as technology continues to advance and at such a rapid rate the possibilities as far as in the arts field continue to widen and I truly believe if you can think it up than there is a way to do it. I chose to use the Little Mermaid for more personal reasons because when I think about fantasy and dreams this particular movie always represented to me the most extreme aspects of that; a mermaid, music playing fish, and an evil sea witch. All of these things aren’t thought of as the everyday and I like that, I want to bring my audience into a state of conscious where disbelief and opposition don’t exist, a state of mind that is free and open to the make believe, if only for a few minutes. I also plan to make the video into a DVD using the software DVD Pro. I have been taught some basics of the software in my digital arts classes over the past semester, and will seek the guidance of my teachers if I come across any difficulties. The DVD menu will have a selection of different versions of the final video. This will make the project interactive for the viewer. The viewer will have the option to select the video version of their choice.

I recent viewed a video piece that was made using the same general idea or more appropriately was executed the same way in which I plan to create my work. The piece I viewed used the Disney classic Alice in Wonderland. The link to this is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pAwR6w2TgxY .

I also grew inspiration though recent advertisements in the media. Companies and items of the everyday were creatively advertised as something magical and/or out of this world. Two examples that come to mind are the Bravia television ads; both links are as follows,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Bb8P7dfjVw, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Bb8P7dfjVw , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLUAbkRUvVQ  and the most recent GE wizard of oz commercial, which can be found http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HieieGE3UNI . I don’t have a specific audience that my project will be intended for as it will be enjoyable and content appropriate for all ages, but the reevaluation and delve back into a fantasy world, back from the mundane of everyday; I feel will be more relatable and better understood by a more mature audience.

The imagery that will be used for my project are all actual clips from the original motions picture, so there will be a lot of bright bold color, exaggeration of detail and repetition of imagery. Throughout my piece aesthetically I plan to have good flow and fluidity in my wok, and that will be achieved through my ability to accurately relate and enhance my score to match the movie image.

Bad Photoshop?

Check it!!

Ok! magazine came out with another classic photoshop gone wrong
maybe some of us in class should send in our resumes, maybe we can help this awful magazine get back on its feet! haha enjoy

Inspirational week

This week has been a pretty inspirational week for me, I like how in class we really ventured out into exploring new creative softwares and programs. Although I always seem to enjoy programs like photoshop, illustrator and flash (adobe suites, etc) I feel comfortable even in the beginning stages of learning software like soundtrack, garageband, vdmx, quartz, etc. We haven't gone over vdmx quartz or processing in digital art 2 yet, but I was introduced to the programs through new directions in digital art. I think I'd really like to explore these programs and ones like them to see what possibilities are out there for me and my art. I would like to do more work with music and video , projections and interactive performances, possibly involving my audience in my art through live input or remote controls, etc. I had a lot of fun in class with mixing songs, and making podcasts. I think I will be making more podcasts and mixes in the future, maybe if I feel more confident about my end results I will make them more public, possible performances, we'll see though!!
